  The Book of Genesis: In The Beginning

  This Bible book sermon series is a ten-week overview of the major stories and themes in the first book of the Pentateuch, Genesis. This is the story of God creating and bringing order and function into the earth, the rebellion of humanity against divine authority, and God’s unfolding plan to restore creation and humankind to his original purposes through grace and faith. Genesis 1–11 tells of God and his relationship to the entire world, while Genesis 12–50 describes God’s relation to Abraham and his descendants.

    Week 1

    There is one true God and he is the author of all creation. God brings order, function, and beauty out of the dark, watery chaos by creating a magnificent garden and creating humankind in his image.

    Week 2

    As Adam and Eve carry out God’s mandate for the earth, Satan enters the story to entice the couple to humanity’s original rebellion against God.

    Week 3

    The story of the flood reveals a God who is both holy Judge and gracious Redeemer.

    Week 4

    As humanity begins to fill the earth once again, they continue their rebellion, and so God comes and scatters all the people by confusing their language.

    Week 5

    God initiates his plan to rescue humanity through his covenant with the family of Abraham, in order to restore divine blessing to all nations.

    Week 6

    As God continues to bring forth his plan of redemption for the world through Abraham and Sarah, the couple must wait on God to fulfill his promise, rather than seeking to accomplish it in their flesh.

    Week 7

    God has fulfilled his promise by providing a child named Isaac to Abraham and Sarah, but now Abraham must once again put his faith and trust in God as he obeys a very difficult command.

    Week 8

    Even though God’s promises extend to Abraham's future offspring, God is still working in the lives of the Abraham's current descendants, transforming them into his people.

    Week 9

    Joseph shows us that as we seek after and walk in the promises of God, trials still come our way; but the struggles, hardships, and betrayals we face can powerfully transform our lives as we encounter God in the midst of them.

    Even though others seek to bring evil upon us, God will always use it for our good.
