  The Book of Lamentations: Grace In Grief

  Grace In Grief is a 5-week in-depth series over the book of Lamentations. Using Jeremiah’s account of Jerusalem’s downfall as a template for sin and suffering, this teaching explores the range of human responses to pain, difficulty, and correction. By observing God’s judgment of Judah, Lamentations explores the character of God, and His patient love for us. Each week looks at a different attribute of God: 1) Holiness; 2) Mercy; 3) Goodness; 4) Patience; 5) Grace.

    Week 1

    Chapter 1 of Lamentations describes Jerusalem’s destruction as a result of sin and rebellion against God. In our own lives, do we take personal sin as serious as God does?

    Week 2

    God’s anger towards sin is always right, just as Jeremiah describes in this chapter. Even when we may feel like God is angry with us, we can have hope that He will not forsake us because Jesus paid the penalty for our sin.

    Week 3

    Jeremiah describes his personal suffering during this dark time in his nation’s history, and, in the middle of his lament, he makes a beautiful declaration of his hope in God. Even in our most trying circumstances, we can trust that God will remain faithful and good.

    Week 4

    Jeremiah returns to describing the emotional devastation of the people who are suffering in Jerusalem. Suffering can either lead us to accept God’s patient prodding or turn from Him out of bitterness.

    Week 5

    Lamentations ends with a prayer for God to restore the Jewish people. Whatever the cause of our suffering, we can find hope in knowing God is not going to abandon us; He offers us grace.
