  How To Study The Bible

  This series outlines four principles of effective Bible study. Each week, one aspect of the SOAP (Scripture, Observation, Application, and Prayer) method of study will be highlighted, giving a simple and practical way to stay engaged in the Word. Through the study of the Bible, God gives us a means of hope, knowledge, understanding, and connection.

    Week 1

    (Scripture) The Bible is our authority. It is important to study it, not only to gain academic knowledge, but to allow it to guide our lives and give us hope.

    Week 2

    (Observation) Reading Scripture within the context in which it was written helps us correctly interpret the meaning. Using the proper tools to find the intended meaning—without inserting our message into a passage—lets God’s message influence our lives.

    Week 3

    (Application) The Bible is relevant for today and intended to influence and guide every part of our lives—when we choose to apply it.

    Week 4

    (Prayer) Prayer is an integral part of Bible study. It keeps our hearts open to what God wants to accomplish, gives us time to reflect on his words, and is crucial in keeping hearts humble and in relationship with Jesus (instead of just filled with biblical knowledge without understanding).
